Top price of $20,000 for bull

BEEF: Average price of $9676 at Mt Mable Angus annual 2-year-old bull sale

Mt Mable Angus of Kumeroa held their 37th annual 2-year-old bull sale on Monday, June 13. While initially the bidding was as ferocious as the weather outside the selling shed, a couple of key regular buyers being absent, through both ill health and bulls not being required, saw the average slip down from previous years and nine bulls not find a home. Nevertheless the Friels were happy to see many of their long term buyers not only get the bulls they wanted but for very good prices with several bulls selling for the first bid of $5000. In the end 34/43 bulls offered were sold for an average price of $9676. Lewis Small of Pongaroa, beat off some fierce competition and secured Lot 8, a very promising home bred son of Mt Mable Intrigue 1790, for $20,000. Two other Intrigue sons made similar money with one, 2030, going to stud duties at Ratanui Stud at Wairoa for $19,000 and another, 2062, sold for $18,000. He will be joining other Mt Mable bred sire bulls at Waituna West. Kevin and Megan Friel are very happy with the way the Intrigue 1790 bull is breeding for them and have a fabulous team of yearling bulls by the same sire coming through again this year. The bull himself is sound as a rising 5-year-old and will have more calves born in the spring, before having specially selected cows run with him again for a 2023 calving. As always the Friels were able to rely on a team of family and friends in assisting to make the day run smoothly and all the yard and catering helpers, PGG Wrightson auctioneer Cam Heggie and all other stock agents and firms. ■
